Fostering a rescued cat can be a very rewarding experience, but it can also be a lot of work. We hope you will consider fostering a cat for Fabulous Felines NWA on a trial basis, and if you decide that cat fostering is for you, we hope you will continue to foster for Fabulous Felines NWA for a very long time. Without a pool of reliable long-term foster homes, our rescue could not operate, and many more cats would suffer in northwest Arkansas.
Fostering a Cat:
Frequently Asked Questions
What do I need to do before I can foster for Fabulous Felines NWA?
For the health and safety of our foster cats, we require foster homes to follow some basic protocols and procedures. For example, your personal pets must be in good health, spayed or neutered, current on appropriate vaccinations, and free of fleas or worms. While you are fostering a Fabulous Felines NWA cat, we ask that you not take in animals from other sources without following our quarantine protocols. We require our cats to be fostered indoors-only, and we would like to do a home visit to determine the limitations to your fostering capability.
How long would I be fostering the cat?
It depends. Healthy, young kittens are adopted very quickly, sometimes in a matter of weeks, while adults might spend many months in our system without receiving a single adoption application. Orphaned kittens and sick or injured cats might need months of care before they are even eligible to be adopted. We will try to match you with a foster cat based on how much you are willing and able to do, and how long you are willing and able to foster.
What about bills and supplies?
If you are able and willing to donate toward the care of your foster cat, we greatly appreciate it. Vetting costs are covered for Fabulous Felines NWA foster cats, but you are responsible for the vetting of your own pets (such as virus testing and vaccination of personal cats before introducing foster cats into the home). We sometimes have food, litter, and supplies available for our foster cats, but these supplies will be limited to the brands and quantities that are donated to us or purchased in bulk by our board of directors, unless an expense has been pre-approved for reimbursement. Volunteers need to communicate their needs to the board of directors and arrange to pick up supplies.
What exactly would I be expected to do as a Fabulous Felines NWA volunteer?
Depending on the type of cat you choose to foster, your duties may vary. But in general, all volunteers have some minimum responsibilities. For example, since the internet is so crucial to our adoption efforts, we need volunteers to email us recent photos of our foster cats, particularly for young kittens which rapidly grow and change in appearance. Volunteers need reliable transportation and schedules that will allow them to transport our cats to and from vet appointments, adoption events, and meetings with potential adopters. Most importantly, our volunteers need to keep in touch with us using our Google Groups forum, which is where we plan and discuss things as a group via email.
Please email us for more information, including our intake protocols and a fostering contract.
